What is an Appraisal?
An appraisal is an estimate of the fair market value of an asset performed by a qualified, impartial professional called an appraiser. Lisa Taylor, our founder, is a qualified Graduate Personal Property Appraiser (GPPA).
An appraisal involves researching the asset’s provenance and performance, analyzing comparable sales, and applying accepted industry valuation methods to arrive at a value conclusion. Appraisals can also include professional authentication by a third party expert. The appraised value attempts to determine the current selling price the asset would obtain on the open market. For estate planning purposes, appraisals on all assets are important to calculate net worth, taxes, and equitable distribution of inheritances. Quality appraisals provide well-supported value conclusions. An appraisal can be defended to insurance companies and in a court of law.
What is a Valuation?
A valuation is similar to an appraisal, but less intensive and not legally binding. Valuations are created based on what the item “appears to be” and available data from recent comparable sales.
Do I need an Appraisal or Valuation?
Appraisals can be very important for estate planning and insurance claims. A formal appraisal makes the most sense when the value provided is legally binding or provides the foundation/defense for an insurance claim.
Our clients with the intention of selling their personal property assets are typically looking for a valuation – meaning, they simply want an educated guess as to how much value they can expect from a sale. We are happy to go over all of this during our complimentary in-home consultation in Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, Mercer Island and throughout King County.
